SEE OUR CLIENT LISTA large, Canadian oil and gas company was experiencing tremendous growth, both to its revenues and employee base. Internal communications, however, was having a tough time keeping up. Especially the company's intranet.
Like many large oil and gas companies, this company was is divided into several business lines, with a large number of employees and sub-contractors located in disparate locations. So, an intranet that lacked focus and was difficult to navigate led to diminished usage, outdated content and a dissatisfaction among employees.
Due to the shear size of the intranet, we were brought in to improve the structure and navigability of one business unit's area of the intranet.
To solve this problem, we first needed to peak under the hood. So, we conducted an extensive usability evaluation.
Next we met with a number of project stakeholders and end-users. These interviews helped us understand what employees did day-to-day, how the intranet was used and where did the company want to take it. End-users continued to be involved through card sorting exercises as we developed organizing principles and site map.
The project ended with the development of a functional prototype that would easily demostrate to employees and company executives the intranet's new structure. The prototype was developed, reviewed and revised iteratively with project stakeholders.
The final product was well received by employees and executives. In its first full month, the new look intranet for this single business unit was witnessing an eight-fold increase in traffic - 80,000 visits compared to 10,000 per month previously.
